Disneyland and Disabilities Do Mix Disneyland is not just for able bodied visitors. Even if you are confined to a wheelchair or on crutches, you can still enjoy all the fun at Disneyland. But Disneyland is a big place and the tip to making it fun is to accept all the help on offer.
So if you’re on crutches and don’t want sore arms or armpits, think about renting a Disneyland Scooter to get around the park. The rental fee is $35 per day, with a $20 deposit. You will need a valid driver’s license and must be eighteen years or older. Or you could rent a wheelchair. The rental fee for a wheelchair (not electronic) is $8 per day, with a $20 deposit. You can rent your scooter or wheelchair direct from Disneyland or use a private company and have it delivered to your hotel room. It is probably going to be cheaper to use a private company but you will need to shop around and weigh up the cost saving with the convenience of getting it at Disneyland. As you would expect, all of the restaurants and shops have wheelchair access, as do the entertainment areas. Some of the rides are not suitable for people in wheelchairs. For example, Donald’s Boat, Sailing Ship and Tarzan’s Tree House fall into that category. Thankfully Disneyland has so many attractions that there are still plenty left to choose from including the Disney Gallery, Disneyland Monorail, the Disneyland Railroad, the Tiki Room, the Golden Horseshoe, It’s A Small World, Mark Twain Riverboat, and Tom Sawyer Island. For some attractions you will need to be transferred from your wheelchair. These include Alice in Wonderland, Indiana Jones, and the King Arthur Carrousel. Cast members and service personnel are very happy to help with transfers as needed. If you happen to lose of wheelchair or scooter that you’ve rented from Disneyland then all you need to do to get a replacement is show your hire ticket. However, if a wheelchair or scooter that was rented from an outside company, Disneyland will not be able to help you replace it, and you may have to pay the rental company the full value of the chair. This is another factor to consider when you are trying to decide whether to rent from Disneyland or a private company. Whether you can enjoy a ride in your wheelchair, or you must be transferred from your wheelchair to the ride, you can actually enjoy most of the rides at Disneyland. Do not allow the fact that you can’t walk around the park keep you from planning a Disneyland Vacation. Again, Disneyland was designed with everyone in mind!
